Projects in Australia
Our mission in Australia is to spark an ongoing conversation about the unintended consequences of voluntourism and raise funds for the programs we support in Cambodia. We achieve this through a number of ways:
Publications - Our CEO, Sally Hetherington OAM, released a book in 2019 titled ‘It’s Not About Me’, which documents her five years living in Cambodia, how she developed Human and Hope Association and the importance of local empowerment. She also frequently publishes thought-provoking pieces through online media, such as Thrive Global.
Media Appearances – We appear frequently in the media to discuss this issue and have been featured on ABC Nightlife, ABC Focus, The Daily Telegraph, Good Magazine and the World Nomads podcast to name a few.
Speaking Opportunities – We are often hosted by universities, service clubs, schools and companies to talk about the importance of local empowerment and what travellers can do to help countries like Cambodia without participating in voluntourism.
Purpose and Philanthropy Field Trips – These ethical tours to Siem Reap raise funds for the programs we support in Cambodia and awareness about how to be an ethical traveller.
Walk to Cambodia – Our annual Walk to Cambodia is a virtual event that sees participants collectively walk the distance from Australia to Cambodia whilst raising vital funds for children’s education
Shop on Purpose – Through online sales and corporate markets, we sell handicrafts that are made by women who have graduated from our program partner’s sewing program in Cambodia. This job enables them to earn an income at home, working at their own pace and taking care of their children at the same time.
