The world is currently experiencing uncertainty, fear and social isolation. We want you to know that we are all in this together.
At Human and Hope, we are trying to navigate the need to protect our health and wellbeing and still ensure that the vital programs we support in Cambodia can continue.
We need your support more than ever.
Tourism in Siem Reap is down 70 – 90%. Businesses are closing, countless people are losing their jobs and the flow-on effect to the most vulnerable people in society is yet to be measured.
Our program partners Human and Hope Cambodia need an immediate reprieve – the Cambodian government has forced the closure of all entertainment venues, many hotels and restaurants have closed and the schools in Siem Reap are still closed for at least another five weeks. This means that many staff members’ families have lost their jobs, and are relying on them for support. There is no government support in Cambodia for the unemployed. Additionally, with borders closing, Human and Hope’s handicraft income (their main source of income) are down to a pittance.
When this is all over, their community will need Human and Hope Cambodia to access skills, knowledge, business support and mentoring. We need their long-term, dedicated staff to still be around to run these programs.
Additionally, some events we were relying on have also been cancelled; speaking engagements, our Mother’s Day corporate markets and our comedy night. As we are a very lean charity, these cancellations have put us in a vulnerable position.
The good news is, there are three ways you can help whilst also taking care of yourself.

Walk to Cambodia
Our virtual Walk to Cambodia is still going ahead in April, and we are partnering with some generous fitness professionals to bring you free online classes that can be undertaken in the comfort of your own homes. These classes will help you with both your physical and mental health, something that is critical in these uncertain times.
DanceDesk with Dance Health Alliance
Join Gwen Korebrits, the founder of the Dance Health Alliance, as she takes you through a 30-minute class that is tailored towards working from home. This class is suitable for all ages, and is very beneficial for those who want to stimulate their immune system and maintain positive mental health.
Zumba with Project Enko
Exercise the mind, strengthen the body and lift the spirit with Project Enko! Never danced before? No problem. Take everything at your own pace and just keep moving. Two things are a guarantee; serious sweat and smiles.
Yoga with Eve White
Join Eve White as she leads us through therapeutic yoga classes. Eve believes in a world where everyone wakes feeling connected, which is exactly what you will feel with these classes.
More fitness and mindfulness classes will be added soon, so keep an eye on our website!

Purchase our ‘Hope Handicrafts’
With our corporate markets being cancelled as offices shift to working from home, we have been left with a big gap in our funding. Our ‘Hope Handicrafts’ are made by women who have graduated from the sewing program at Human and Hope Cambodia. This job enables them to earn an income at home, working at their own pace and taking care of their children at the same time. Your purchase will help to create a livelihood for these women and will give them hope, with the proceeds supporting education programs that are in dire need of funding. Some of the awesome products available include:
Bamboo Straws in Pouch – $10.99
Are you keen to make the move to a zero-waste lifestyle? Our bamboo straws are a great start! These natural straws are reusable, biodegradable, BPA-free and sustainable. Our straws are handcrafted by Khmer villagers in rural Takeo province, creating employment opportunities for disadvantaged Cambodian communities.
Give single-use plastic straws a miss and use these straws for everyday life, parties and special occasions.
The pack of four straws are a mix of different diameters as they are handmade and natural. They come in a fabric pouch with a natural hemp cleaning brush.
Book Sleeves – $19.99
Are you someone who likes to read on the go? Our book sleeves avoid your books from getting bent or crumpled. Measuring 18cm x 23cm, our book sleeves fit most standard size paperbacks. They have a padded inner lining so that you can say goodbye to damaged books!
Crayon Carrier – $14.99
Keep the kids entertained at home. Each carrier is made in Cambodia from cotton fabric with a coconut shell button and includes 16 non-toxic crayons.
The carrier rolls up easily so it can be stored away, and you won’t find yourself constantly replacing lost and smushed crayons.
Purchase our Hope Handicrafts here. Orders made before 12pm will have same-day shipping.
We need to come together. This situation has taught us that we truly are global citizens. We encourage you to help your immediate neighbours, but we must not forget those doing it tough overseas with no government support, limited healthcare options and often dangerous living dwellings. If there is any way you can get involved, please contact our CEO, Sally Hetherington OAM, at firstname.lastname@example.org.
